Nicole Schiener is passionate about fostering healthy relationships at home and work and is on a mission to liberate mothers from perfectionism and the pressure to do it all. Part 1 of my conversation with Nicole Schiener included the following:

-Topics connected to Eve Rodsky’s book, FAIRPLAY- A Game Changing Solution for When You Have Too Much to Do (and More Life to Live).
i.e. the misconception that women have infinite time and men have finite time. As Eve Rodsky says in her book.
-Recovering from the pandemic
-Burnout and Compassion Fatigue and the difference between the two.
-How therapy can support you.
-In Nicole’s words how can we “Care without carrying all the responsibilities.”

Listen to the full conversation here. Part 1.

More of what we talked about in Part 2 of our conversation.

-Women are socialized to devalue their time. We explored one of the rules described in Eve Rodsky’s book, FAIR PLAY ( A Game-Changing Solution for When You Have To Much To Do): Rule #1-ALL TIME IS CREATED EQUAL and how we have existed inside a construct in which men’s time is treated as finite but women’s as infinite.

-What might equity in relationship look like.

-Tips and insights on raising our kids to honor time and responsibility. Including at what age we may expect kids to start making their own lunches and cleaning their rooms.

-We spoke to the invisible work, the mental load, the emotional labour and all that shows up in a day’s work (and that’s outside of the work we get paid for).

And much more with some levity and warmth.

“We expect women to work like they don’t have children and raise children like they don’t have work.” Amy Westervelt. Quote shared in ‘FAIR PLAY’.

Amy Lang, MA, Sex Educator extraordinaire, enthusiastically walks us through the ways we can speak to our kids about sex, what to say and when to say it (it’s much earlier than you think, well it’s much earlier than what I thought!) and oh so much more….you don’t want to miss out on this valuable and important episode full of practical tips and scripts and how-tos delivered in Amy’s candid, easy-going, approachable way.

And there is so much more information and wise advice Amy provides in her books, online and through her amazing advice podcast where you can get your questions answered in bite size advice column style responses. Check it out: Just Say THIS Podcast.

Amy Lang, MA has been a sexual health educator for over 25 years. Surprised by her discomfort with just the idea of talking with her young son about his body, she knew she needed help. Amy did a bunch of research to learn how to talk with kids about bodies and sexuality and realized she could help other parents with this important part of parenting.

In 2006 she started Birds & Bees & Kids. With her lively, engaging, and down-to-earth style she helps parents become comfortable and confident talking with their kids. Amy’s books, online solutions center, and podcast called “Just Say This”, show parents they really can become their kids’ go-to birds and bees source.

Anna Seewald, M.Ed., is a parenting educator, parent, speaker, author and founder of the successful and widely listened to Authentic Parenting Podcast. If you don’t already know Anna, you will quickly feel like you want to. Anna brings both great meaning and levity to any conversation. I have loved her podcast from first listening to it a few years ago. Anna is a remarkable human being with a transformational life story marked early on by severe loss and tragedy as a child who survived the 1988 Spitak earthquake and tragically lost her mother. Each day Anna makes a positive and meaningful difference in the lives of children, parents and educators.

In this conversation Anna talked about her own experience with trauma and her current experience navigating the pandemic, offering insight and importrant reminders for our mental health. Thank you Anna. We also laughed, Anna sang for us a little bit (with my coaxing) and we talked podcasting as kindred podcast host and producer spirits that we are. It was as always with Anna, deep and meaningful and fun. Thank you Anna @authentic.parenting.podcast.
Let us know what you are taking with you from this conversation for your resilience and mental health.

Be sure to subscribe to Anna’s podcast anywhere you find your podcasts. www.AuthenticParenting.com.
As she said “we can’t orient to something that is always changing” and yet she managed to orient us nonetheless, despite these changing times in the midst of this global pandemic.

Also, a conversation with Deborah wouldn’t be complete without speaking about emotional health, well-being and play and what we can do to allow our feelings to be safely expressed. I was reminded, yet again how critical play is for emotional health and well-being not just for the children and youth we are raising, educating and caring for, but us adults too. Deborah MacNamara’s dedication and work towards asking this question she raised in our conversation, “what does it mean to be human and how do we stay well?” of course confirms why her words and research and wisdom are imperative, needed and welcomed and so beneficial to us all. To your rest and your play and your growth.

She regularly presents to parents, educators, child care professionals, social workers, the foster and adopt community, and health care professionals, sharing her insight and passion for making sense of kids. She is a developmentalist at heart who is continually fascinated by the mysteries and beauty inherent in human maturation.
